Quality care in mental health & learning disabilities

Franklin Homes

Experience & empathy

Shaun Winter

After 30 years in the hair industry, I wanted to change direction and find more fulfilling employment so I decided to work in care. Following two years at a secure hospital, I was looking for a more ‘hands-on’ approach with service users.

I was attracted to Franklin Homes ethos of providing individual care programmes, which complement the needs of each service user. I was offered a placement and now support my colleagues in providing one-to-one care for service users with wide-ranging behavioural problems and disabilities.

I find this job extremely rewarding because the relationships between staff and their service users can be nurtured over a long time and create a family atmosphere.

This deep understanding of service users’ needs is then reflected in the individual care programmes we compile to help each person develop and gain independence.

The staff here at Franklin Homes really encourage me to develop my understanding of my client’s needs and conditions and offer advice on training opportunities to constantly develop these skills. I am now undertaking an NVQ 2 in care, which will increase my knowledge of service users’ problems and help me to further enrich their quality of life.

I used to work in care with the elderly. Seeking out a new challenge to help younger people with learning difficulties, I took up a position with Franklin Homes.

Since joining the team here at the Mews in 2005, I have seen at first-hand the improvement in our service users. By helping them to feel safe and secure, we can build close relationships and encourage them to do more for themselves.

Our staff help create a homely environment in which our residents thrive, and we are passionate about meeting the needs of each individual to help their personal development.

I gain such fulfilment from devising care plans and sharing the clients joy when they achieve their goals and acquire new skills. It is a wonderful to be a part of their journey.
